As health professionals, we understand the importance of maintaining an active lifestyle for overall well-being. However, when the summer heat kicks in and the temperature rises, it’s crucial to take caution and prioritise your health and safety. Here are some tips to ensure you stay safe and healthy while working out in the heat.
- Hydration is key: Hydrate well before your workout. Take sips of water throughout. Rehydrate after your sessions. Opt for electrolyte rich drinks for prolonged or intense workouts to replenish lost minerals.
- Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek, Slide – Protect your skin: Apply sunscreen with high SPF to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. Wear a hat and sunglasses to shield yourself from the sun. These are all important even if the sun is behind the clouds, UV levels can still be high and damaging.
- Choose the most appropriate time: Schedule your workouts during the cooler parts of the day; typically early mornings or late evenings to avoid peak heat.
- Dress wisely: Wear lightweight, loose fitting and light-coloured clothing to reflect the sun.
- Listen to your body: Pay attention to signs of heat-related stress, such as dizziness, measure, excessive sweating. Take breaks and rehydrate.
- Modify intensity: Adjust the intensity and duration of your workout in hot weather. Consider lower-impact exercises to prevent overheating.
Always prioritise safety, especially in extreme weather conditions. If in doubt, consult with your healthcare provider before starting a new exercise routine.
